| Summary |
Something unthinkable has happened to, Kristin, a dear friend and active volunteer in the Denver community.
Last summer she had a dinner party. A friend was hugging her dog, Campbell, around his next at the same time a chair dropped on Campbell's tail, breaking it. Unfortunately, he reacted to the pain by inadvertently biting Kristin's friend's lip. No one argues that Campbell is a vicious dog. It was merely an unfortunately set of circumstances.
Kristin promised to cover any non-reimbursed expenses from the accident. They amounted to $200. She inquired with her insurance company, Safeco, if submitted the $200 would adversely affect her home owners insurance. The claims adjuster said no.
The week of June 2nd, she was dropped from her home owners insurance company and had until June 9th to find a new insurance company. Because Safeco considers this claim open, she can only find one other insurance company to cover her at an additional cost of $5,000!! Apparently, Safeco admits that their employee did say she wouldn’t be affected, but it was the wrong employee who said this. After it was too late, she was told that only an underwriter could have told her how submitting a claim would affect her policy.
This wouldn't have been so bad if she had not gotten into a horrendous car accident last December and simultaneously lost her job (her employer, Lehman Mortgage Division shut down.) Safeco also providers her medical insurance , covering her physical therapy and is also refusing to pay for legitimate expenses associated with her accident. They are claiming that because she saw a chiropractor at one time, her physical therapy is pre-existing. Never mind that she went through a windshield. Her COBRA, medical insurance that she absolutely needs, at $700 a month, is no longer affordable. She continues to look for a job, but it's hampered by medical emergencies resulting from the accident, which would be less of an issue, if she had medical insurance and if SAFECO would pay for claims they agreed to pay for.
We purchase insurance to help lessen the consequences from unforeseen circumstances, not aggravate them. It is very sad that insurance companies have the right to do this to us at our worst moments. |
